College football’s week 1 lasted 5 days. Get caught up on the latest recap of an exciting opening week.

Here is what you need to know and to watch for in college football week 2.

Top Games of the Week

Texas vs LSU

The last regular season game between these schools took place 65 years ago – Texas won 20-6 in Austin in 1954. These teams have played twice since, both times in the Cotton Bowl. LSU blanked Texas 13-0 in 1963 and Texas won 35-20 in 2003.

Both teams beat Group of Five teams week 1, but did so with no struggle. Texas beat Louisiana Tech 45-14 and QB Sam Ehlinger threw 4 TDs. LSU won 55-3 against a Georgia Southern team that won 11 games in 2018. QB Joe Burrow threw 5 TDs and 4 incompletions.

Texas A&M vs Clemson

This is the second half of a home-and-home series that was played at College Station last year. Clemson won 28-26 in what was their closest win of the year (and one of two wins by single digits).

The biggest difference between 2018 and 2019 is that Kelly Bryant started for Clemson and Trevor Lawrence is now the guy at QB. The key for Clemson is RB Travis Etienne, who is coming off a 200+ yard, 3 TD game in week 1. He was held to just 44 yards on 8 carries in last year’s game.

The Rest of the Best

Stanford @ USC

Trojans QB JT Daniels will miss the season after a knee injury suffered in week 1. A brutal loss for a team looking to rebound from a terrible 5 win 2018 season and a coach squarely on the hot seat. Stanford has QB injury issues too and won an ugly game at home against Northwestern.

Cincinnati @ Ohio State

Buckeyes are 43-3 all-time vs active FBS teams from Ohio and their last loss was in 1897 to Cincinnati.

Season on the brink

BYU @ Tennessee

BYU lost their opener to rival Utah and Tennessee suffered the worst loss of week 1, losing at home to Sun Belt’s Georgia State. A second consecutive home loss to open the year might spell the end of coach Jeremy Pruitt’s tenure in a hurry. An 0-2 start for BYU, would significantly impact the mindset of a team who does not play in a conference and doesn’t have much to play for outside of winning six games and going to a mediocre bowl game.

San Diego State @ UCLA

Bruins lost week 1 to Cincinnati in ugly fashion and QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 8-26 passes and turned the ball over 4 times. San Diego State won 6-0 in a dud of a game. Bruins cannot afford a second straight 0-2 start.

Top Group of Five Games

  • Marshall vs Boise State
  • SMU vs North Texas
  • UCF vs Florida Atlantic

2018 Rematches

Virginia Tech vs Old Dominion – ODU SHOCKED the football world by beating Virginia Tech last year 49-35, on their way to a 4-8 season.

USF vs Georgia Tech – USF had one of the most disappointing losses of week 1 (49-0 to Wisconsin). They beat Georgia Tech last year4 49-38 and go on the road this week vs a team in transition.

Utah vs Northern Illinois – Utes won an ugly game, 17-6, in Dekalb, Illinois during week 2 last year.

Nebraska vs Colorado – This game was a classic last year. Nebraska’s week 1 game vs Akron was cancelled due to lightning, so this was Scott Frost’s official debut. Colorado QB Steven Montez threw the game winning touchdown pass with just over one minute to go. Down 28-27, Montez hit Lavishka Shenault Jr on a 40 yard TD. Shenault finished with 10 catches, 177 yards and that TD. Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez burst one the scene with 117 yards rushing and 2 TDs, and 15-20 passing, with TD and INT. All three of those noted players return to this game and both teams finished under .500 last year.

Minnesota vs Fresno State – Gophers won 21-14 and this was one of just two losses suffered by Fresno State last season. Minnesota won an ugly opener 28-21 against FCS South Dakota State. Fresno State lost to USC, while breaking in a ton of new players. This is a big game for both teams with Fresno State looking to continue their momentum and add another P5 win for the Mountain West and Minnesota has higher expectations in year 3 of the PJ Fleck era.
