Hindsight NFL Draft Report: Revisiting 2016 Trades for Jared Goff and Carson Wentz

2016 NFL Draft was supposed see the Tennessee Titans pick first, followed by the Cleveland Browns picking second. Both teams traded down, allowing the LA Rams and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively, to trade up and grab their franchise quarterbacks.

But the NFL Draft is a complicated event. Rams/Titans and Eagles/Browns trades became bigger than just those respective teams and just a few players.

Those two trades ultimately turned into 16 trades, involving 15 teams and 47 players across four different drafts (2016-2020).

In it’s simplest form, here are the 16 trades that resulted in the Rams and Eagles moving up in 2016 to draft their QBs.

This trade is not over! The Patriots own the Bears’ 4th round pick (#125) in 2020.

The 2016 #8 pick was traded 3 times between 4 teams

  • Initially owned by the Dolphins, they traded #8 to the Eagles for #13, CB Byron Maxwell, and LB Kiko Alonso
  • Eagles traded #8 to the Browns, to move up to #2 to draft QB Carson Wentz Browns traded #8 to the Titans, who went from 1 to 15 to 8 (Browns went 2 to 8 to 15)
  • Titans drafted OT Jack Conklin
