Super Bowl Recap

Patriots Win….Again

New England Patriots tied the Pittsburgh Steelers with 6 Super Bowl championships, the most of any franchise. It was their second championship in three years after three straight Super Bowl appearances. It wasn’t pretty – it was quite the opposite. It was awful. Patriots won 13-3, and the first TD wasn’t scored until late in the 4th quarter.

Dropping the Mic on Patriots Dynasty

I LOVE IT! And I am a New Yorker. Here’s the thing. Like everyone else outside of Boston, I don’t like the Patriots. I’m sick and tired of the Patriots. And I’m ready to move on from this era. But at same time, I also appreciate and respect what I am watching. I am not old enough to recall the old Lakers and Celtics dynasties or remember seeing any of the Cowboys or 49ers 5 Super Bowls. But I read and hear stories about them all the time. I read and hear stories about the all-time great teams and players, but for the last 18 years it has been awesome to watch history unfold in front of me. I don’t care what anyone says.

What makes this years Patriots team so special is how the coaching staff evolved the offense. Tom Brady is the greatest QB of all-time, but he certainly didn’t play like a top 5 QB in 2018 and at times didn’t look like a top 10 QB either. Patriots became a more run oriented team, allowing Brady’s exposure and hits to be limited. He made the plays he needed to but Sony Michel, Rex Burkhead, and James White played much larger roles than Patriots RBs have in the past.

Quick Game Thoughts

As for the game itself, how can people have been bored?! The classic Chiefs-Rams 54-51 Monday night game was amazing back in November. This was a different kind of amazing. Every single play was meaningful. Every single play should have had you on the edge of your seat because it could have meant a game changing play, either a mistake or a positive play. Defensive football IS fun. And while the Rams offense was bad, chalk one up to the Patriots defense who knew how to rattle him. I didn’t hate this game. I wasn’t bored. And to the people who were bored, keep in mind that now we don’t have football again until August.

Maroon 5. Rams 3

There really isn’t much to say about the Rams. Jared Goff was awful. Todd Gurley was MIA for most of the first half. Sean McVay and Wade Phillips failed to make meaningful adjustments and failed to maximize some of the Patriots miscues, which included an early interception, sack fumble of Brady, 5 Patriots punts, and a missed field goal. It was a disappointing effort for a team who absolutely proved they were among the league’s best throughout the season and earned this spot by beating the Saints fair and square.

Be sure to check out the MIKEDROP Podcast on Tuesday morning for a very hot take discussion on Jared Goff

What’s next for both teams

Patriots have much more questions than answers. Rob Gronkowski’s future? Julian Edelman’s future? Every WR beyond those two is eligible for free agency. They will need to replace several coaches with LB coach Brian Flores off to the Dolphins and will likely bring several assistants with him (such as QB coach Chad O’Shea). Looking ahead to 2019, can the Patriots do it again? Well, of course they can. The other three AFC East teams suck, have sucked for 18 years and will suck for at least another year in 2019. Patriots will be back…

For the Rams, they went all in on free agency this year. Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley, Jared Goff, Brandin Cooks will be back. But what about guys like Ndamukong Suh, Dante Fowler, Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters, Andre Whitworth?

10 Things to Know

Puppy Bowl had more TDs than the Super Bowl

Julian Edelman became the 7th WR all-time to win Super Bowl MVP and the first since Santonio Holmes in SB XLIII. He becomes the second Patriots WR (Deion Branch).

Edelman wins MVP after being suspended the first four games of the 2018 season. Tom Brady was suspended the first four games of the 2016 season and went on to win Super Bowl MVP vs Falcons. I wonder how many Patriots are going to cheat before next year?

Sony Michel, who also made a strong case for MVP with the game’s only TD, became the 2nd rookie in the last 30 seasons to rush for a touchdown in the Super Bowl

The Los Angeles Rams set a Super Bowl record tonight with the most consecutive drives ending with a punt (8)

Teams ranked No. 2 and No. 4 in scoring during the 2018 regular season, played in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in history

Rams averaging 32.9 ppg during the regular season and 28 ppg in two playoff games, before scoring just 3 points in the Super Bowl

Nick Foles is the last QB to throw a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl

Brandin Cooks loses back-to-back Super Bowls with two different teams (Patriots 2018, Rams 2019)

Patriots have won 6 games in a row vs Rams, which includes 2 Super Bowl victories

Halftime Thoughts

I enjoyed halftime. But that’s largely because I like Maroon 5 music. Look, the problem with halftime shows now is it’s impossible to appeal to every audience. Everyone has a different taste in music and entertainment. Big Boi and Travis Scott both made cameos, as did Spongebob. I thought it was all fine and well done.

Commercial MVP

Advertising Winner Goes to Skittles

While the NFL’s 100th anniversary ad is by far the winner and trailers like Captain Marvel and Avengers were highly anticipated, the big winner in the advertising world on Sunday was Skittles. Did you see the commercial? No? That’s because they didn’t air one. Instead of spending $5 million required to air a commercial, they put on a low production musical in NYC Sunday afternoon, making fun of advertising, while also promoting Skittles. In my opinion, it worked! Skittles was trending for a large part of the day, they sold merchandise at the event and social media was buzzing about this strategy. Plus, it’s skittles! Who doesn’t enjoy the taste of the rainbow?!

Dropping the mic on NBA trade deadline rumors

Anthony Davis will not be traded by Thursday. I am going to continue to say this because I truly believe this. We know the Celtics cannot make a deal before Thursday and what the Lakers are willing to trade and what interests the Pelicans is yet to be seen. The bottom line is, I truly believe Pelicans should and will hold him for two reasons

  • 1. I can’t see them trading him to a West team. Davis as a Laker will haunt Pelicans for years and years to come. Look at Paul George and the Pacers – they sent him to Oklahoma City because they wouldn’t let him go to the Cavs. Spurs never engaged Lakers on Kawhi Leonard and sent him East. I just do not see it happening.
  • 2. I strongly believe the Celtics offer, with Jason Tatum and potential Kings/Grizzlies lottery picks and other assets like Jaylen Brown, Terry Rozier, Marcus Smart is greater than anything the Lakers or anyone else can offer. It would be compete franchise malpractice to not wait to have every card on the table before trading Davis

Yes, I’m aware that Davis’ father made some pretty damning remarks about the Celtics and loyalty, but this is coming from someone who is showing no loyalty to the only franchise he has ever known, so what is loyalty right? Plus, it’s not up to Davis! Or his father. If he wants to be traded, Pelicans will likely honor the request. But they owe him nothing as far as where they sent him. Remember, Paul George really, really wanted to a a Laker. He swore he would sign even after the trade to OKC. Friendly reminder that George signed a 5 year deal with OKC on July 1, 2018. He may hate the idea of Boston now, but give Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens a year to recruit him to stay and see what happens. I’d have a hard time seeing him leave to join s 36 year old Lebron James if the Celtics made a run to the 2020 NBA Finals.

Last thoughts on KP/Knicks

Kristaps Porzingis continues to imply some nastiness behind the scenes after his departure from the Knicks. Whastever happened, happened. Time for everyone involved to move on. Knicks clearly got what they wanted – a young prospect (Dennis Smith Jr) and cap space. No other team in the NBA was capable of taking Hardaway AND Lee’s contracts AND offering a young prospect like Smith AND two first round picks. No one. Based on the Knicks priorities (right or wrong) they got the best possible deal for Porzingis, even if they didn’t shop him around the league to every team. And as I noted in my podcast last Friday, I believe they did the right thing.

In other Knicks news – Deandre Jordan and Wesley Matthews, the two guys the Knicks acquired from the Mavs, are both expected to be bought out after the trade deadline. God forbid, the Knicks try and win some games down the stretch. Jordan can be a perfect fit for the Rockets, who are without Clint Capela and who could reunite him with former Clippers teammate Chris Paul. And Matthews could be a fit on the Thunder, who could use more depth and shooting.

Stat of the Day

With the Memphis Grizzlies win over the NY Knicks on Sunday afternoon, 31 total teams have won at MSG since the last time the Knicks won there. That was on December 1 against the Milwaukee Bucks. The list of teams that have won includes – 13 NBA teams 9 college basketball teams 8 NHL teams 1 college hockey team.

Overall, Knicks have lost 13 straight games, 21 of 22, and 26 of 28 games. Their last win was against the Lebron-less Lakers.
