MLB 2019 Preview – Playoffs History

As the 2019 MLB season gets underway, here’s a look at the recent playoff trends of each team including streaks, droughts, successes, failures. Organized by division.



Red Sox won 2018 World Series, their 4th since 2004. In 2 of the prior 3 instances, they actually failed to make the playoffs. 

Yankees have not advanced to the World Series since 2009, which is also the last time they won it.

Since winning back-to-back World Series in 1992 and 1993, Blue Jays have only made playoffs twice (2015, 2016). They lost 86+ games the last two years. 

Rays have existed for 21 years (since 1998) and have won just 3 playoff series. They lost their lone World Series appearance in 2008. They haven’t been to the playoffs since 2013.

Between 1998 and 2011, the Orioles were playoff-less. They have made it three times since 2012.


Indians have won the division each of the last 3 years and they also have the longest World Series drought at 70 years (last won in 1939)

Twins have not won a playoff game since 2004, and haven’t won a playoff series since 2002. Since than they’ve been swept 3 times and lost the Wild Card game in 2017.

Tigers havent made the playoffs since a run of 4 consecutive appearances between 2011-2014.

The last 3 times the Royals made the playoffs, they made the World Series. (1985, 2014, 2015). They haven’t been back since winning it all in 2015. In 9 playoff series, Royals have only won a series during 4 of those appearances and each time their season ended in the World Series.

White Sox have not made playoffs since 2008, winning their last playoff series in 2005 – the World Series.


Astros won their first World Series in 2017 and have made the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years. Their 2015 appearance ended a 9 year drought.

Rangers lost in the World Series in back-to-back years in 2010-2011. They have made the playoffs three times, losing their first series each team since.

Mariners have never won the World Series and are one of two MLB teams to never even make it. They last the playoffs in 2001,holding the longest playoff drought in all of the four pro major sports at 17 years.

Athletics have lost 5 straight playoff series, last winning one in 2006. Their last two appearances (2018, 2014) were losses in the Wild Card game.

Angels have not won a playoff series since 2009. Mike Trout has never been part of a playoff win at all – game or series. They’ve made just one appearance since 2011 and were swept by Royals


Nationals are one of two teams (Seattle the other) to never make the World Series. They have lost all four playoff series they have appeared in as the Washington Nationals. As a franchise (including Montreal Expos), they have won just ONE playoff series ever (1981). Of the 5 playoff series they have lost, 4 of them have gone to the max 5 games.

Phillies have the 5th longest playoff drought, last making it in 2011, which was also the last time they had a winning season.

Braves have lost 9 straight playoff series with their last series win coming back in 2001.

Mets have just 9 playoff appearances all-time. 7 of those 9 have included at least one series win.

Marlins are an incredible 6-0 in playoff series! They have 2 World Series titles, 2 division titles, however outside of those two years (1997, 2003) they have been pretty terrible with just four other winning seasons. That’s 6 winning seasons in 26 years (franchise born in 1993).


Cardinals have missed playoffs 3 straight seasons. They have not finished with a below .500 record since 2007.

Cubs seek their 5th striaght playoff appearance in 2019.

Last year’s NLCS run snapped a 6 year playoff drought for the Brewers. 1982 was their last World Series appearance and they have never won it.

In 2010, Reds won the pennant and made playoffs, snapping a 14 year drought. They have lost the 3 playoff series since and have missed playoffs 5 straight years. 1995 was Reds last playoff series win. 

Pirates have second longest World Series drought at 39 years. They played the one game Wild Card game 3 straight years, from 2013-2015 and haven’t made the playoffs since. They went 1-2 over that stretch and are 0-4 in best of 5 series since the 1979 World Series.


Dodgers have won West division6 years n a row and have not had a losing record since 2005. They have lost back-to-back World Series.

Diamondbacks last made the playoffs in 2017 and last won a playoff game in 2011. They last won a series in 2007.

Rockies have never won the World Series and only have 5 playoff appearances all-time, including each of the last two seasons.

Giants have missed playoffs 2 years in a row, the first time they have gone consecutive playoff-less years since 2008-2009. They won 3 World Series from 2010-2014 and their only playoff win since was 2016 Wild card game.

Padres have the 3rd longest playoff drought in baseball at 10 years. Their last playoff series win was 1998, when they last made World Series.
