NFL Week 7 Nostalgic Preview

Chiefs vs Broncos (Thursday Night)

Patrick Mahomes is 3-0 vs Broncos. He made his first career start in week 17 of the 2017 season and won both starts in 2018. He has thrown for 891 total yards, 5 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

Last time the Broncos beat the Chiefs was 2015 – Denver fans should remember that year. The last “good” quarterback they had, some guy named Peyton Manning, threw 3 TD passes, 2 to Emmanuel Sanders who caught 8 passes along with Demaryius Thomas.

Rams vs Falcons

In 2007, the St Louis Rams beat the Falcons in the Edward Jones Dome. For the Falcons, they were a team in transition due to Mike Vick’s arrest and suspension during the pre-season. They used two quarterbacks – Chris Redman and Joey Harrington – and both were ineffective. WR Roddy White caught 10 passes for 146 yards and a TD. TE Alge Crumpler caught 7 passes.

Gus Frerotte (yes, that Gus Frerotte) started at QB for the Rams, throwing 3 TDs and 2 INTs. WRs Torry Holt (6 catches, 136 yards) and Isaac Bruce (4 catches, 31 yards) each caught a touchdown. Steven Jackson ran 20 times for 96 yards and a TD.

Raiders vs Packers

In 2013, Fresno State went 11-2 and won the Mountain West Conference. They were led by (now) Raiders QB Derek Carr and (now) Packers WR Davante Adams. Carr completed 69.9% of his passes and threw for over 5,000 yards (5,083 to be exact), 50 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. Of those 50 TD passes, an absurd 24 of them went to Adams! Adams had 131 catches for 1,719 yards.

49ers vs Redskins

49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was the Redskins Offensive Coordinator from 2010-2013. Washington made the playoffs in 2012 and QB Robert Griffin III won the Rookie of the Year award, under Shanahan’s tutelage.

Jim Tomsula is the current Redskins Defensive Line Coach. which he has been since 2017. Before that, he was on the 49ers coaching staff from 2007-2015, mostly as DL Coach, but also was the Head Coach in 2015, serving as a one year stop gap in between Jim Harbaugh and Chip Kelly. Tomsula’s Niners went 5-11.

Dolphins vs Bills

The 0-5 Dolphins are going back to Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starting quarterback on Sunday. Fitz spent four years in Buffalo (2009-2012) where he started 53 games, going 20-33 in that stretch. Fitzpatrick threw 80 TDs, 64 INTs, while completing 60% of his passes. Fitzpatrick has thrown a touchdown for 8 different teams, an NFL record.

Chargers vs Titans

Ken Whisenhunt is the Offensive Coordinator of the Chargers and has been there since 2016. Prior, he was the Head Coach of the Titans for 23 games. Tennessee went 2-14 in his only full year in 2014 and started 1-6 in 2015, with a rookie quarterback named Marcus Mariota. After a slow start in 2019, Mariota is being benched for this week 7 game and Ryan Tannehill will start for the Titans.

Texans vs Colts

Colts have historically dominated the Texans, leading the all-time series 27-8. That was thanks to Peyton Manning. But Houston has closed the gap a bit the last few years. Of the Texans’ 8 all-time wins, 4 of them have come since the 2015 season.

Jaguars vs Bengals

The 2016 Oklahoma Sooners went 11-2. The leading rusher of that team was (now) Bengals RB Joe Mixon, who ran for 1,274 yards and 10 TDs. The leading receiver of the team was (now) Jaguars WR Dede Westbrook, who had 1,524 yards (on 80 catches) and 17 TDs.

Cardinals vs Giants

Cardinals won the last meeting during week 16 of the 2017 season, a year that ended with the Giants finishing 2-14. Cardinals won 23-0. Cardinals QB Drew Stanton threw 2 TDs, 2 INTs. Touchdowns went to Larry Fitzgerald (119 yards on 9 catches) and John Brown. Eli Manning threw 2 INTs and Wayne Gallman led the Giants in rushing (18 yards) and had the most receptions (6) and third most yards (44).

Last time the Giants beat the Cardinals was 2011 (Cardinals won again in 2014). Eli Manning threw 2 TDs, no turnovers, and threw for 321 yards. The Cardinals QB was Kevin Kolb he did not throw for a touchdown and had 1 interception. All of the Cardinals offense came via RB Beanie Wells, who had 3 touchdowns and 138 yards. Hakeem Nicks and Jake Ballard caught the two Giants touchdowns.

Ravens vs Seahawks

“Earl Thomas revenge game”. Thomas, the 14th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, spent the first 9 years of his career in Seattle, before leaving as a free agent to sign with the Ravens this past off-season. Thomas was a key member of the, now defunct, legion of boom (the nickname given to the Seahawks secondary). He was part of the Super Bowl XLVIII Championship team, 6x Pro Bowler, 3x All-Pro and has 29 career interceptions (1 with Baltimore this year).

Saints vs Bears

Saints have won the last 4 meetings vs the Bears (2017, 2014, 2013, 2011). Bears last victory came in 2008, a 27-24 victory in overtime. Bears were led by QB Kyle Orton, RB Pierre Thomas, and WR Marques Colston.

Most notably, Bears beat the Saints in the 2016 NFC Championship game, to advance to the Super Bowl (where they would lose to the Colts). Rex Grossman was awful, completely 11 of 26 passes for 144 yards and an interception. But Bears RBs Thomas Jones (123 yards, 2 TD) and Cedric Benson (RIP, and 60 yards, 1 TD) combined for 183 yards and 3 TDs to carry the offense. Drew Brees threw for 354 yards and 2 TDs. Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister combined to run for just 37 yards rushing. But Bush caught 7 passes for 132 yards and a TD.

Cowboys vs Eagles

Carson Wentz (#2) and Dak Prescott (#134) are the two best quarterbacks from the 2016 NFL Draft (listen to our Podcast on frauds for why I am discarding the #1 pick from that draft).

Dak Prescott is 35-19 as a starter with career numbers of 66.5% completions, 12,760 yards, 78 TDs, 31 INTs, plus 20 rush TDs. Dak is 1-2 in playoff games.

Carson Wentz is 26-20 as a starter with career numbers of 63% completions, 11, 610 yards, 82 TDs, 31 INTs, plus 3 rush TDs. Wentz has yet to take a snap in a playoff game.
