Ranking Teams with Zero NCAA Tournament Wins

12 teams enter the 2019 NCAA Tournament having never won an NCAA Tournament game.

As part of M!KEDROP MADNESS, we look at 5 teams with a realistic chance to pull off win #1 in the first round of this year’s tournament.

But first, here’s 6 teams with an unrealistic chance to win their first tournament game:

  • 16 seeds – Fairleigh Dickinson, Gardner Webb, NC Central, Prairie View
  • 15 seeds – Colgate, Abiline Christian

In order, 6 teams with the best chance to win their first NCAA Tournament game.

6. Northern Kentucky Norse

Tournament history: 0-1
2019 Tournament: #14 vs 3 Texas Tech

2012-13 was the Norse first official season playing Division 1 basketball and the beginning of 2016 was their first tournament-eligible season. NKU has won the Horizon League Tournament 2 of the last 3 years, losing to Kentucky in 2017 as a 15 seed. Drew McDonald is the player to watch, averaging 19 ppg and 9.5 rpg. McDonald, now a senior, played on that 2017 tournament team, scoring 14 points on 5-18 shooting in 36 minutes.

5. Liberty Flames

Tournament history: 0-3
2019 Tournament: #12 vs 5. Mississippi State

Liberty won at UCLA and beat Lipscomb twice, including in the ASUN finals. Atlantic Sun teams have a recent history of winning tournament games (Florida Gulf Coast). They will be a trendy 12-5 upset pick over Mississippi State

4. UC Irvine Anteaters

Tournament history: 0-1
2019 Tournament: #13 vs 4. Kansas State

It would help UC Irvine’s cause if Kansas State star Dean Wade misses the game due to injury. They won the Big West with a 30-5 record that included wins over Saint Mary’s, Texas A&M and Montana. They average 73 ppg

3. Belmont Bruins

Tournament history: 0-7
2019 Tournament: #11 vs 11 Temple in play-in game; win and play 6. Maryland

Belmont got in as a much deserved at-large. They finished 26-5 with wins over UCLA, Lipscomb, and Murray State. They are led by senior guard Dylan Windler and his 21.4 ppg and 10.7 rpg. If Belmont wins the play-in game vs Temple, they have a pretty good shot to beat Maryland in the first round. Terps have lost 3 of their last 4 and are just 5-5 in their last 10 games.

2. Wofford Terriers

Tournament history: 0-4
2019 Tournament: #7 vs 10. Seton Hall

Wofford entered the AP Top 25 for the first time in school history (#24). They finished 18-0 in Southern Conference play and they haven’t lost since early December. Their four losses are to North Carolina, Kansas, Oklahoma and Mississippi State – pretty respectable losses. Senior guard Fletcher McGee is averaging just over 20 ppg and will be the key player for the Terriers.

1. UCF Knights

Tournament history: 0-4
2019 Tournament: #9 vs 8 VCU

UCF was the pre-season pick to win the AAC. They are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. They face a VCU team that may be without 13.8 ppg scorer Marcus Evans. for UCF, 7’6 center Tacko Fall can pose mismatches for any opponent is averaging 10.9 ppg and 7.3 rpg. UCF is led by two senior guards BJ Taylor (16.0 ppg) and Aubrey Dawkins (15.2 ppg).
