Throwback Thursday – 2005 Cowboys and Dolphins Coaches

In 2005, the Dolphins and Cowboys both went 9-7. Both had legendary head coaches – Nick Saban was in his first (of two) years with the Dolphins and employed quite the coaching staff, in retrospect. The Cowboys were led by Hall of Famer Bill Parcells, who ultimately had 7 future NFL/college head coaches on his staff.

A look back at the (in retrospect) all star coaching staffs these teams had.

2005 Miami Dolphins Coaching Staff

Head coach – Nick Saban

Saban only lasted 2 years in the NFL with Miami, before bolting in 2007 to take the Alabama job. I would say that worked out pretty well for him.

Assistant head coach – Will Muschamp

Current South Carolina head coach and former Florida head coach

Offensive Coordinator – Scott Linehan

Linehan was previously head coach of Stl Rams and most recently was fired by the Cowboys after 5 years as Offensive Coordinator where he worked under…

Quarterbacks coach – Jason Garrett

Funny to think that Garrett once worked under Linehan. He has been Cowboys coach for 8.5 years, winning 2 playoff games in 3 appearances.

TE Coach – Derek Dooley

Former Tennessee Vols head coach and current Missouri OC. Interestingly, Dooley also worked in Dallas under both Garrett and Linehan as Cowboys WR Coach

Offensive Assistant – James Coley.

Current Georgia Offensive Coordinator

Defensive line coach – Dan Quinn

Current Falcons head coach, helped lead them to Super Bowl LI.

Linebackers coach – George Edwards,

Current Vikings Defensive Coordinator

2005 Cowboys coaching staff

Head coach Bill Parcells

His credentials speak for themselves

AHC/Passing game coordinator – Sean Payton

Amazing to think the Cowboys had Payton in their building once and let him walk away. He should have been the heir to Parcells and given a mega deal to be coach-in-waiting. Payton led Saints to a win in Super Bowl XLIV.

RB Coach – Anthony Lynn

21-11 in two years as head coach of LA Chargers

WR coach – Todd Haley

Went 19-26 as head coach of the KC Chiefs from 2009-2011. He was Steelers Offensive Coordinator for a while and worked with Browns in 2018, until being fired.

TE Coach – Paul Pasquoloni

Former Syracuse head coach before getting this job with Cowboys. Would be UConn head coach from 2011-2013, going 10-18.

OL Coach – Tony Sparano

Sadly passed away this past summer, but prior was one of the most respected OL coaches in NFL. Was head coach with Dolphins for fours years from 2008-2011

DC – Mike Zimmer

Current Vikings head coach. Another example, like Payton, of a coach the Cowboys regretfully let get away

Secondary – Todd Bowles

Was Jets head coach for the last 4 years and is now Bucs Defensive Coordinator for 2019

Asst Secondary – Mike MacIntyre

Was Colorado Buffaloes head coach until 2018, when he was fired after this past season. Will serve as Ole Miss Defensive Coordinator in 2019.
