Throwback Thursday – Blazers vs Nuggets

In the NBA Playoffs, Blazers and Nuggets series is tied 1-1. These teams are playing for the chance to make the Western Conference Finals (to face the Warriors).

For the Blazers, it would be their first WCF appearance since the 1999-00 season. For the Nuggets, it would be their first WCF appearance since 2008-09. Both teams lost to the Lakers.

Using statistical analysis, you can use their SimMatchup College Basketball feature to pair teams from different years, like the 1975-76 Hoosiers vs the 1995-96 Kentucky Wildcats, for example. Or the 2009-09 Nuggets vs 1999-00 Blazers.

2008-09 Denver Nuggets (54-28)

This was such a fun Nuggets team with prime Carmelo leading the way. They started the year with Allen Iverson, but he played only 3 games before being traded to Detroit for Chauncey Billups, a move that worked out well for Denver. Kenyon Martin was still in his prime during this season and a young JR Smith hadn’t turned into a complete nut by this time.

1999-2000 Portland Trail Blazers (59-23)

I always forget Scottie Pippen ended his career in Portland. Rasheed Wallace might be one of the most underappreciated stars during this time, for what he did in Portland and Detroit. Ironically, Rasheed and Chauncey would ultimately team up and win a title in Detroit together. It’s crazy, with what we know now, to see a young 21 year old Jermaine O’Neal average only 4 ppg in 12 minutes. And Bonzi Wells was just an average bench guy too.

In 10 simulations, the Blazers won 7 times

Which team do you think was better? Who are you rooting for in this year’s playoffs?
